Ink Drawing of Morpheus

For those of you who might not know, Morpheus is the protagonist of the famous Sandman series by Neil Gaiman. He is one of the endless, otherwise called Dream. And he's pretty much sweet.

Sara Holwerda, Webcomics Reporter. Sorta.

Adam-

In regards to the lecture i went to this evening...

Ted Rall was the speaker. He is a political cartoonist, and has work in something like 140 publications. or he has 140 editiors,..I took a page and a half of notes. mostly bc he was a funny guy and said some things well. but also i wanted to get the dish for you, bc it sounds like his approach to comics is similar to yours...i/e/ not going to school specifically for it, being an avid fan, and consistantly doing work and putting it in a public venue. you have your blog, Ted got his start flyering NYC with his comics. To the point he was arrested. He mentioned Scott McCloud's book, 'Understanding Comics,' and the most important thing he said in regards to what you're doing is that web comics are the new thing.....with the only major drawback being that they aren't economically beneficial for the artists. some bloggers, like you probably know, are charging advertisers. of course, high readership is key there. also, merchandise is a good way to go, like strongbad t-shirts. But he cited persistance, exposure by any means nessesary and being in ever publication you can, and general marketing tenacity as being very big factors for success. He's got a publication DEVOTED to web comic artists, and it's called ATTITUDE, and the third volume is coming out. Like I said, i'm not sure how often, but it doesn't hurt to try. And he's pretty infamous on the left....he's cited as the #15 of '100 People Who are Screwing up America.' (the writers of this book i'm sure did not include Bush, and probably did include Micheal Moore, just in terms of alignment...)

Anyway...I hope this was informative. I really like his talk anyway. he made jokes about his shirt the entire time...it's orange, and it's the one he wears on fox news bc apparently blue is the best color to wear on tv, and orange is the absolute worst.

I think you should come to ann arbor for the film festival. not sure when it is....but i think you'd totally love it.

love you

sara

Um...

Yeah. For lack of a better update, I did another one of the comics that is really just the same one as before.

So here goes. (By the way I wasn't sure if it was even funny, but oh well. In every group there has to be a fat, ugly chick that no one really likes but everyone is nice to anyway...)

In other news, I drew....a bus stop? What is wrong with me?

Hey, Adam! Your comics are funny. Good work. After you draw them what program do you use to put it all together? I am not all that great with paintshops, or the like, but, I am trying to piece this one shot panel I did, together in Paint Shop Pro. Jared has been giving me some ideas. I will keep the Wookiee involved...

Stop, Drop, and Draw

I saw this man while waiting at a bus stop to go home today. Then I drew him. Kind of scary, no?

Today

Today I bought comic books. Miyazaki's Spirited Away has my attention when of a sudden I realize it's a quarter of five. Snatching a misplaced birthday check from my bag, I shrug on my jacket and dash from the room, sliding through chips and macaroni that live on the stairs. As I reached the bus stop, a torrent of pain washed through my head and my teeth clenched. Tylenol?

I get off at the second stop on Grand River, then step into the bank a minute before it closes, cashing my check. The new money I bring upstairs to the comics shop, and drop it on Spiegelmen's Mauses. And on to Barnes and Noble, where Sandman #6 awaits my possession.

Then the bus again, and here I am.

The Mauses I need for class tomorrow. So perhaps I can get those thirty dollars back...

The Way Home

I was in the mood to write a poem, and so I did.

The Way Home

The phone rings and obediently I lift and listen
On the other end a man wraps his expletives in jocularity
Metal, plastic growing warm against my cheek
Electric buzz as my shoes crunch crunch crunch
Broken glass in the frozen grass

Tabula Rasa

Ok, so this idea is nothing new. But for me it is. It's a fun little experiment to see how many different clever comic strips I can make using the same images. Here are the first two. The title "Tabula Rasa" has to do with the fact that each time I make a comic, I start with a clean slate. Which I think is pretty neat.

1. A Drip of Mucus

2. Mmm...Sibling

The New Semester

Ok. So last semester I had some really horribly boring/bad/hard/stupid/dumb classes. And I didn't like any of them....well maybe spanish. This semester I'm taking 4 classes that I love. LOVE. I won't waste any time telling you that they are:

Visions of the Universe - A sort of Astronomy class. My prof is the co-writer of our text.

Teacher Education 150 - Intro to Teacher Ed, heard it's easy, teacher's nice. I'm one of two boys in there, so that's fun.

English 210 - One of four boys, teacher's nice, I told everyone that I CAN'T WRITE ESSAYS. And The Things They Carried by O' Brien's on the booklist. Did I mention I love that book? Because I love that book.

Comics and Animation in America - such a sweet class. I got to buy COMIC books. WITH MY PARENTS' MONEY. And....McCloud's Understanding Comics is a required book, so I e-mailed the dude about it. Maybe he'll come visit.

In other news, I finagled my PS2 connection with the MSU servers so it goes online now. I know you don't care, it just makes me feel smart. Also, I sent a story to MSU's lit mag "The Offbeat" yesterday. Here's to hoping I make it.

Here's to hoping I don't die tomorrow. Cheers!
